About This Drug
The drugs in the angiotensin II blocker family, also referred to as angiotensin II receptor antagonists, are prescribed for individuals who have high blood pressure and, in the case of losartan, also for left ventricular hypertrophy (an abnormally sized left ventricle).
These drugs block the effects of angiotensin II, a substance that causes the blood vessels to constrict and thus raise blood pressure. Thus angiotensin II blockers help the blood vessels remain open and thus keep blood pressure down. None of these drugs are a cure for hypertension; they merely help control it.
