Side Effects

Report any side effects you may experience to your health-care practitioner. Only a health-care practitioner can decide whether it is safe for you to continue to take the drug. It is possible to experience an excessive lowering of blood pressure with the first dose. Symptoms include lightheadedness or faintness.

The side effect profiles for each drug in this class differ.

Candesartan

  • Less Common or Rare: chills, cough or hoarseness, fever, lower back or side pain, difficult or painful urination, dizziness, joint pain, nosebleed or bleeding gums, swelling of feet or lower legs

Eprosartan

  • Less Common or Rare: abdominal pain, burning or painful urination, changes in urinary frequency, cough, dizziness, fever, joint pain, sore throat, swollen face, lips, limbs, or tongue, unusual tiredness

Irbesartan

  • Less Common or Rare: anxiety and/or nervousness, belching, cold-like symptoms, confusion, dark urine, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, heartburn, hive-like swelling on face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or sex organs, irregular heartbeat, itching, jaundice, loss of appetite, muscle or bone pain, numbness or tingling in hands, feet, or lips, shortness of breath, unusual tiredness, weakness or heaviness in the legs

Losartan

  • Common: headache
  • Less Common: back pain, fatigue, diarrhea, nasal congestion
  • Rare: difficulty breathing or swallowing, hoarseness, swelling of the face, mouth, hands, or throat, dizziness, cough, fever, sore throat

Olmesartan

  • Common: dizziness. This is the only side effect reported from the clinical trials by the manufacturer at the time of this writing. See “Open Questions or Controversies.”

Telmisartan

  • Less Common or Rare: abdominal pain, back pain, changes in urinary frequency, changes in vision, changes in appetite, coughing, diarrhea, dry mouth, dizziness, ear congestion or pain, fever, head congestion, headache, heartburn, increased sweating, muscle pain or spasm, nasal congestion, nausea, nervousness, painful urination, rapid heartbeat, rash, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, swelling in hands, lower legs, and feet

Valsartan

  • Less Common: abdominal pain, anxiety, constipation, cough, dizziness, dry mouth, edema, fatigue, gas, impotence, heart palpitations, insomnia, joint pain, nausea, rash, sinusitis, viral infection, upper respiratory infection
