Astrology and Compatibility

Astrology is often used to determine compatibility between two people. Astrologers assess compatibility by comparing the positions of signs and planets in two people’s birth charts.

Using the Elements to Predict Compatibility

Planets in signs of the same or compatible elements predict a high degree of compatibility between two people (see Signs of the Zodiac), with one exception. The opposite sign, the sign located directly across from your sign on the birth chart, suggests a challenging relationship in which the two people will have opposing perspectives.

Fire with Fire/Air

If the Sun, Moon, ascendant, or many planets in your birth chart are moving through fire signs, you’ll have the best compatibility with people whose horoscopes have many planets in fire and air signs:

Using the Planets to Predict Compatibility

Astrologers also analyze the aspects and signs of the inner planets on two people’s horoscopes to predict compatibility (see Signs of the Zodiac and The Aspects).

High compatibility: Occurs when planets in two people’s horoscopes appear in signs of compatible elements
Low compatibility: Occurs when planets appear in signs of incompatible elements

Planets, Aspects, and Compatibility

Whether the aspect between an inner planet on your birth chart and the same planet on your partner’s birth chart is positive or negative suggests certain details about your compatibility.

Sun	How your charisma and ego will affect the relationship	Your charisma and ego will support and encourage the other person.	You may overwhelm your partner.
Moon	How your emotional needs and approach to daily affairs will affect the relationship	Your needs and approach to life will comfort your partner.	You may make your partner uneasy.
Mercury	How your communication style will affect the relationship	Your partner will easily understand you.	You may have trouble making yourself understood.
Venus	How your values and approach to pleasure will affect the relationship	You and your partner will enjoy the same things.	You may conflict over money, possessions, and your idea of a good relationship.
Mars	How your approach to conflict will affect the relationship	You and your partner will challenge each other in productive ways.	You may endure frequent arguments.

Using the Modalities to Predict Incompatibility

People with planets in signs of the same modality on their horoscopes will tend to have exciting, passionate relationships but likely won’t achieve long-term compatibility, because:

Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): Both of you like to be the one in charge.
Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): Both of you can be inflexible and like to do things your own way.
Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): Both of you can have a difficult time sticking to one course of action and are prone to stress.
