Astrology for Everyday Decisions

The fast pace of daily life makes it impractical to plan every activity with astrology. Even so, astrologers often use the Moon and the underlying meaning of the days of the week to guide basic everyday planning. The days of the week are easy to follow, of course, but to track the progress of the Moon as it moves through the zodiac, you’ll need an ephemeris or an astrological calendar—a special type of calendar available in most bookstores that includes daily information about:
  • The current day’s Moon sign
  • The current phase of the Moon
  • The void-of-course Moon period

Today’s Moon Sign

The Moon moves through each sign of the zodiac in about two and a half days. The sign the Moon is currently in reflects the overall approach you should take to the day, including:
  • The style of clothing to wear that will appeal to people
  • The overall mood you should expect from people
  • The best way to approach work and other people
The following table outlines the style and approach to follow, and the mood to expect from others, as the Moon moves through the 12 signs of the zodiac.

The Phases of the Moon

Each month, the visible shape of the Moon waxes (grows) from a thin crescent to a full circle and then wanes (shrinks) back to a crescent. Astrologers believe that these different phases of the Moon can help determine the best times of the month to:
  • Make plans for future endeavors
  • Begin new endeavors or take action to fulfill your plans
  • Relax and let things take their natural course

The Waxing Moon

During the part of the month when the Moon appears to be growing successively larger each night, it is called the waxing Moon. There are two important phases of the waxing Moon: the new Moon and the first quarter Moon.

  • New Moon (or crescent Moon): Occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and appears as a narrow crescent at sunset. The day on which the new Moon falls, which varies from month to month, is the best time of the month to start new project. Typically occurs anywhere from the 20th to the final day of the month.
  • First quarter Moon: The best day to review the projects you initiated at the new Moon and take action to ensure that you realize your goals. Typically occurs on the third, fourth, or fifth day of the month.

The Waning Moon

During the part of the month when the Moon appears to be getting successively smaller each night, it is called the waning Moon. There are two important phases of the waning Moon: the full Moon and the last quarter Moon.

  • Full Moon: The day on which you should begin to see results from projects you began during the new Moon. Typically occurs between the 10th and 15th days of the month.
  • Last quarter Moon (or third quarter Moon): The time to let go of the hopes and expectations of the previous new Moon and prepare to move on to the Moon’s next monthly cycle. Typically occurs between the 15th and 25th days of the month.

The Void-of-Course Moon

The Moon is said to be void-of-course when it’s crossing from one sign into the next. This period may last anywhere from a few seconds to a few days. To find out precisely when the Moon will be void-of-course, consult an ephemeris or an astrological calendar.

Using the Void-of-Course Moon

The void-of-course Moon is considered an ideal time to begin endeavors that you’d like to see progress smoothly and without complications. For example, astrologers suggest doing the following during the void-of-course Moon:
  • Mail your income tax return (to avoid an audit)
  • Break up with a partner (to make a clean break)
  • Begin an exercise routine (to ensure you stick with it)
But you should avoid taking action during a void-of-course Moon if you seek a particular outcome or change in your situation. The void-of-course Moon is seen as a poor time to:
  • Have a job interview
  • Begin a marriage or start a business
  • Ask for a favor

The Days of the Week

Each day of the week is associated with either the Sun, the Moon, or one of the five visible planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn). Astrologers suggest using each day for activities typically associated with the day’s planet.
