Astrology Fundamentals
Astrology is the study of celestial activity and its connection to earthly affairs. Practitioners of astrology, called astrologers, interpret maps of the heavens, or horoscopes, to gain insight into the characteristic traits, tendencies, and circumstances of people and events. An astrologer might, for example, use a horoscope to analyze:
- The birth of a person
- The beginning of a job or marriage
- A major purchase, such as a car or home
- A move to a new residence
- The founding of a company
- A major medical procedure, such as surgery
- Political and historical events, such as elections
- Natural disasters, such as earthquakes or hurricanes
Astrologers try to use the information in horoscopes to:
- Gain deeper insight into their lives and personalities
- Help predict and make decisions about life events
How Astrology Works
Anyone can learn basic astrology. The first step toward learning how astrology works is understanding its premise and how astrology readings work.
The Premise of Astrology
Astrology is based on the belief that a set of universal laws governs both Earth and the sky and that these laws create a strong relationship between what happens in the sky and what happens on Earth.
Not all astrologers agree about how these universal laws apply, but most believe heavenly bodies (the Moon, Sun, planets, and so on) do influence human fate and behavior.
The Astrology Reading
An astrology reading is the forum in which an astrologer interprets a specific horoscope to analyze, and sometimes make predictions about, people or events. In order to perform a reading, the astrologer must first create a horoscope for the individual or event being examined.
- For individuals: The horoscope, known as a birth chart, is based on the time, date, and location of the person’s birth.
- For events: The horoscope is based on the time, date, and location of the event (past, present, or future).
An astrology reading can take place in person, on the telephone, in a written report, or even in real time online.
Types of Astrology
Different types of astrology are used for different purposes, such as to predict political events or to forecast financial trends. The two most popular types of astrology are:
- Natal astrology: Studies traits and tendencies of individuals based on the time and place of birth. Daily newspaper horoscopes are an example of a generalized approach to natal astrology.
- Relationship astrology: Evaluates human relationships based on certain factors in birth charts. Relationship astrology is sometimes called synastry.
