How to Overcome Obstacles
Unfortunately, your role as maid of honor may not always run as smoothly as you might hope. It’s best to recognize and anticipate problems or obstacles in advance and prepare for them.
What to Do If You Live Far Away
As maid of honor, your job can be tough if you live far away from the bride, but that doesn’t mean you can’t fulfill your obligations. Communication becomes even more important when you can’t be physically available on a regular basis. If this is the case, you may want to:
- Take a trip to the bride’s hometown so that you can shop for the wedding dress and bridal party dresses together—you can even plan this shopping excursion to coincide with the engagement party for convenience
- Schedule the bridal shower and bachelorette party during the same weekend so you can attend both in one visit
- Launch a wedding website where you can post pictures of bridesmaids’ dresses or ideas for showers so that everyone involved in the wedding can have access to them
Tips for Keeping Organized
Different organizational systems work for different people, but in general, it’s a good idea to:
- Keep all the important dates, from the bridal shower to the first dress fitting, in one place
- Make sure you have the email addresses and phone numbers of the bride, bridesmaids, and bride’s mother as soon as the bride asks you to be her maid of honor
- Add contacts, such as phone numbers and addresses of dress shops, to your phone list as time goes on
- Set up a separate wedding email address that’s easy to remember so that the bride and bridesmaids can easily email you with questions
