Important Precautions
- Tell your health-care practitioner if you are sensitive or allergic to betaxolol or any other drugs.
- Betaxolol should be used with caution if you have asthma or other respiratory problems, diabetes, decreased heart function, or other heart problems, myasthenia gravis, pheochromocytoma, circulation problems or kidney or liver disease.
- If you will be undergoing surgery, your health-care practitioner may advise you to stop taking betaxolol several days before the procedure, as surgical anesthesia can increase the risk of heart problems during surgery.
- This medication can lose some of its effectiveness for glaucoma if you have been taking it for a long time.
- Call your health-care practitioner immediately if you experience depression, back or joint pain, breathing difficulties, rash, cold hands or feet, fainting, dizziness, or irregular heartbeat.
- Because betaxolol can cause drowsiness, dizziness, or eye problems, make sure you know how you react to the drug before you take it and drive or operate hazardous equipment.
Pregnant Women
Although the effects of betaxolol on pregnant or breastfeeding women have not been adequately studied, infants born to women who took other beta-blockers while pregnant had low blood pressure, lower birth weights, and reduced heart rates. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, talk to your health-care practitioner. Betaxolol should be avoided during pregnancy.
Beta-blockers pass into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, your health-care practitioner will likely advise you to stop until your treatment is complete.
Seniors
Older adults may need less of the drug to achieve the desired results. Side effects such as cold hands and feet, chest pain, breathing difficulties, increased sweating, changes in heartbeat, and reduced body temperature are more likely to affect seniors.
