Important Precautions
- Tell your health-care practitioner if you are sensitive or allergic to captopril or to any other drugs.
- Rarely, captopril causes very low blood pressure. It may also cause dizziness or fainting. Until you know how you respond to the drug, do not drive or operate hazardous equipment.
- Captopril may cause a reduction in kidney function, especially if you have heart failure. Your health-care practitioner may need to adjust your dosage if you have kidney problems.
- Captopril may increase your risk of getting an infection. Your health-care practitioner should periodically check your blood count.
- If you are taking captopril for your heart, do not increase physical activity too quickly. Discuss your exercise program with your health-care practitioner.
- If you develop swelling of your tongue, throat, face, arms, or legs while taking captopril, stop taking the drug and contact your health-care practitioner immediately.
Pregnant Women
Captopril can cause birth defects or death to a developing fetus, especially during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, talk to your health-care practitioner about the potential risks to your unborn child.
Small amounts of captopril pass into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, your health-care practitioner may advise you to stop while you are under treatment.
Seniors
Side effects are more likely to occur and to be more severe among older adults.
