How to Clean Stucco and Stone Exteriors
Cleaning methods for stucco exteriors and stone exteriors are similar.
Stucco
Though easy to clean, stucco is brittle and cracks easily. Before using a pressure washer to clean stucco, repair any cracks or imperfections that may allow water to seep into the walls, and always allow your repairs to cure fully.
- Pressure-washing: A pressure washer won’t harm stucco that’s in good repair, but it will blast away any loose paint that’s applied to areas near your stucco. For mold and mildew, use a commercial mildew remover or a solution of one part bleach to three parts water. Use trisodium phosphate (TSP) or laundry detergent for ordinary grime, or combine either detergent or TSP with bleach. Rinse well.
- Handwashing: To protect paint or other delicate finishing materials, you may prefer to wash stucco by hand. Use a bleach solution for mildew, a detergent solution for grime, or a combination of the two. Wet the stucco first, then scrub with long strokes with a natural-fiber brush, working from the bottom to the top to avoid streaks. Replace your wash water as soon as it becomes dirty, and rinse well with a garden hose before the walls dry.
Stone
Unless you’re a professional, avoid pressure-washing stone. Pressurized water can blast sand and caulking from the joints between stones, severely damaging your walls in the process. To clean stone walls, follow the guidelines for handwashing stucco, above.
