Placing Numbers
Placing numbers, also called a place bet or placing to win, is a wager that the shooter will roll a particular number before rolling a 7. For example, placing the 8 to win is a bet that an 8 will be rolled before a 7. Any other roll is irrelevant to the place bet.
How to Make a Place Bet
To make a place bet, tell the dealer the number you want, then put your chips on the table. To place the 8, for example, say, “Place the eight!” The dealer will move your chips to the small “Place” area just below the appropriate number.

Payouts and House Edge on Placing Numbers
The payout and house edge vary depending on which number is placed. Because casinos don’t deal in small change, bet only in the multiples listed in the table below to avoid getting shortchanged.

Placing to Lose
Though done far less often than placing to win, it is also possible to place to lose, which is a wager that the shooter will roll a 7 before the placed number.
How to Place to Lose
To place to lose, make it very clear that you’re picking a number to lose by saying, “Place the eight (or whichever number you want) to lose!”
Payout and the House Edge for Placing to Lose
