Getting Started

This crocheted mesh sweater is worked in one piece, from the bottom up, in rows, starting at a point that you crochet into a triangle. Once the bottom triangle is worked, the rows become rounds when you join the side. The body is worked up to the armholes, and then the sweater is divided into front and back.

The sleeves are added on after the shoulder seams are joined. The back of the sweater is the same as the front—and there is no right or wrong side of the fabric until you get to the neck edge. Then the right side of the sweater is the last row of the neck edge. Be sure to join the shoulder seams with the right sides of the front and back facing each other, so the seam will be on the inside.

Finally, follow the sleeve directions, adding more rows at the top if needed. You might want to decrease every 3rd or 4th row, or add rows to the bottom of the sleeve.

Skill Level

  • Intermediate

You Will Need

  • 726yd (968, 1089)/653m (871, 980) worsted weight cotton blend yarn in yellow-green
  • Hook, 6.5mm/K/101⁄2 or size needed to obtain gauge

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch)
  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Slip stitch (sl st)

Special Stitches

  • Picot: Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hk, sk 1 sc, sl st in next sc = 1 picot
  • Dec dc: Start a dc, yo, insert hk, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 lps on hk. Yo, insert hk in next st, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 loops on hk, yo, pull through all lps on hk = 1 dec dc.

Gauge

  • Always take time to check your gauge.
  • Mesh pattern: 6 pattern repeats = 6 rows = approx 4"/10cm
When you’re working with yarn in this particular pattern stitch, you may find that the material stretches. When you measure your gauge, place the fabric on a flat surface, without pulling the edges out. Your gauge will be approximate; because of the nature of the material, it won't be exact. If your gauge is off by a lot, change your hook size.

Materials Used in the Featured Sweater

  • 6 (8, 9) skeins of Schoeller Stahl’s Portofino, 40% cotton/40% acrylic/20% polyamide, in Lemon (#4712), 1.75oz/50g = approximately 121yd/110m each

Finished Measurements

  • This sweater is designed to fit bust sizes S (34"/86cm), M (38"/96cm), and L (42"/107cm). The completed garment will drape well and stretch a bit. It’s meant to be somewhat loose.
If you want to make a larger sweater, simply crochet more rows at the beginning, until the width of the triangle is approximately the chest measurement you want. Crochet the sides in rounds up to the underarm. You may have to add more rounds. Then crochet the front and the back, adding more rows if desired.
