Getting Started

Felting Basics

The results of felting can vary greatly and are dependent upon the type and color of wool used, water temperature and quality, the washing machine used, and the amount of time and agitation to which the piece is subjected.

You can felt the body of the bag and shoulder strap in the same wash cycle but they should be placed in separate zippered lingerie bags or pillow protectors. This prevents the two pieces from felting together. It also protects your washing machine from excessive lint.

Skill Level

  • Experienced Beginner

You Will Need

  • 575yd/526m of worsted weight felting wool in medium brown (A)
  • 90yd/82m of worsted weight felting wool in medium green (B)
  • 90yd/82m of worsted weight felting wool in fuchsia (C)
  • Hook, 6mm/J-10 or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle
  • 2 buttons, 1⁄2"-1"/13mm-25mm diameter

Gauge

  • Always take time to check your gauge.
  • 16 dc = 4"/10cm before felting
  • 11 rows = 4"/10cm before felting

Pattern Notes

  • To change color, work last stitch to last yarn over (2 loops remaining on hook for double crochet, 6 loops on hook for Bobble stitch), yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete the stitch. Drop, but do not cut, old color. Carry old color beneath stitches of new color to next color change or end of row.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch)
  • Half double crochet (hdc)
  • Bobble Stitch (Bbl), Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; [yarn over, insert hook in same st, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 4 times, yarn over and draw through all 6 loops on hook.
