Felting

  • Placed the tote body and shoulder strap in separate zippered lingerie bags or pillow protectors.
  • Set washer to hot water, a low water level, and the highest agitation setting possible.
  • Place pieces to be felted (along with an old pair of jeans for additional agitation) into the washer and add laundry detergent for a normal-sized load.
  • Run the wash cycle, stopping occasionally to check the progress. It may take several wash cycles to achieve the desired result.
  • When desired level of density and degree of shrinkage is achieved, remove the pieces from washer, and rinse until the water runs clear.
  • Carefully shape the felted pieces and lay them flat on a sweater rack to dry.
  • Drying time varies. It may take a couple of days.

Finishing

  • If felted pieces appear uneven, block lightly before assembling.
  • Fold the body of the bag in half, bringing first row up to meet last row. With A, whipstitch side edges together.
  • Line up top of one side seam of bag with center of one end of shoulder strap. With A, securely sew the end of the strap to the body of the bag. Taking care not to twist strap, repeat with the other end of the strap.
  • Sew one button over each end of strap.
  • Weave in all yarn ends.
