Instructions
Bag
- With A, ch 47.
- Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (45 hdc).
- Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each hdc across.
- Repeat Row 2 until piece measures about 23"/58 cm. Fasten off, leaving a 24"/61cm end for seaming.
Handle
- (make 2)
- With A, ch 7.
- Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (5 hdc).
- Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each hdc across.
- Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 26"/66cm. Fasten off, leaving a 12"/31cm end for sewing.
Dragonfly Appliqué
Upper Wings
- With B, ch 14.
- Row 1: Working in back bars of ch, sl st in first ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 8 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch. Fasten off.
- Rnd 2: Join C with sl st in first ch of Row 1, sc in each space between sts all the way around Row 1; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Lower Wings
- With B, ch 12.
- Row 1: Working in back bars of ch, sl st in first ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch. Fasten off.
- Rnd 2: Join C with sl st in first ch of Row 1, sc in each space between sts all the way around Row 1; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Dragonfly Body
- With D, ch 12.
- Row 1: Working in back bars of ch, sl st in first ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch, ch 4 for first antenna. Fasten off, leaving a 12"/31cm end for sewing.
- Join D with sl st at base of first antenna, ch 4. Fasten off, leaving a 12"/31cm end for sewing.
Finishing
- Fold bag rectangle in half, bringing first row to meet last row. The sides of the bag are formed by the folded edge and where the first and last rows meet. Note lower right corner of bag. Unfold bag rectangle.
- Using the featured tote’s photograph as a guide, place upper and lower wings on lower right corner of the bag. With C, sew upper and lower wings in place. With D, sew dragonfly body across the wings. With yarn ends of the antennae, sew down antennae.
- Fold bag rectangle in half, bringing first row to meet last row. With A, whipstitch the lower seam and side seam.
- Whipstitch ends of first handle to front of bag 1-1/2"/4cm in from each side edge. Take care not to twist handle when sewing second end. Repeat on back for second handle.
- Weave in all yarn ends.
