About This Drug
Enalapril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor prescribed primarily to control high blood pressure and to treat congestive heart failure.
Like other ACE inhibitors, enalapril blocks an enzyme that produces angiotensin, a substance that causes blood vessels to constrict and promotes production of aldosterone, which causes the body to retain sodium. Thus ACE inhibitors cause blood vessels to relax and reduce sodium retention, which lowers blood pressure.
