Important Precautions

  • Tell your health-care practitioner if you are sensitive or allergic to guanabenz or to any other drugs, especially any sympathomimetic drugs (e.g., ephedrine, guaifenesin).
  • Consult your health-care practitioner before stopping guanabenz. Do not stop taking guanabenz suddenly, because you may experience serious health problems, including a sudden rise in blood pressure to dangerous levels (known as rebound effect). Symptoms include severe headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, blurred vision, chest pain, anxiety, heartbeat irregularities, and breathing difficulties. Contact your health-care practitioner immediately if these symptoms occur.
  • Because guanabenz can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and faintness, make sure you know how you react to the drug before you drive or operate dangerous equipment.
  • Before taking guanabenz, talk to your health-care practitioner if you have a blood disease, heart disease, stroke, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, or an overactive thyroid or if you will be having surgery requiring general or spinal anesthesia (including dental surgery) within the next 2 months.

Pregnant Women

No adequate studies of the effects of guanabenz on pregnant or nursing women have been done. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, talk to your health-care practitioner. You and your health-care practitioner must weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks to the fetus.

Guanabenz may pass into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, your health-care practitioner will likely advise you to stop until treatment is done.

Seniors

Older adults may experience more side effects, and they may be more severe.
