- Step-by-step instructions and photography
- A stencil pattern
Getting Started
Stenciling is a simple painting technique that lets you create interesting, whimsical, and beautiful designs on furniture and other household items.
Rules for Good Stenciling
- Affix the stencil firmly to the surface.
- Always use a clean, dry stencil brush for each color.
- Remember that stenciling requires a very small amount of paint. Your brush should be almost dry to the touch.
- To avoid applying the wrong paint to adjoining areas, cover the areas you don’t want to paint with a stencil mask or easy-release tape.
Frottage Technique
This is a simple technique, sometimes referred to as the leather-look or cellophane method, that’s amazingly versatile and can produce a variety of effects. You’ll first apply a glaze mixture to your surface, place a sheet of crinkled plastic over the wet glaze and press it down with your hands. You’ll then remove the plastic immediately, and lightly pounce the area with smaller wadded up pieces of plastic or a sponge.
