iPod Settings and Extras

You can customize your iPod and use tools such as a calendar and contact list by working with the settings and extra features built into the device.

How to Change Your iPod’s Settings

The Settings menu lets you customize your iPod. To access it, select Settings on the Main menu of the classic or nano or the main screen of the touch. Settings you can control include:
  • About: Displays information about your iPod, including the serial and model numbers, free and used memory, and the number of songs and photos stored on the iPod.
  • Date & Time: Changes the date and time, sets your time zone, or switches between a 12- or 24-hour clock.
  • Backlight Timer: Controls how long the screen backlight stays on before turning itself off (which affects the iPod’s battery life).
  • Clicker: Allows you to turn off the click sound the iPod makes when you use the clickwheel.

iPod Extras

The iPod classic, nano, and touch include a few programs that can help you organize your life. On the classic and nano, they’re found on the Extras menu. On the touch, they’re found on the main screen.

Calendar and Contacts

You can sync your Calendar and Address Book (Mac), or Outlook Calendar and Outlook/Outlook Express Contacts (PC), with your iPod so that you can carry your calendar and contact info with you wherever you go. Macs and PCs use iTunes to copy this data to the iPod.
  1. With your iPod connected, go to the iPod Preferences screen in iTunes. Click the Sync Contacts box and then click Apply.
  2. From the same tab or pane in the iPod Preferences screen, click the Sync Calendars box to sync your calendar.
