An Introduction to Smart Filters

New to Photoshop CS3, Smart Filters let you apply filters to layers without modifying the content in those layers directly, just as Adjustment Layers let you adjust the properties of a layer without modifying its content. Smart Filters are very useful for three main reasons:
  • Smart Filters are nondestructive: Smart Filters affect the appearance of a layer but do not irrevocably alter the pixels that the layer contains. That means you can remove or change the filter at any point without actually modifying or degrading the quality of the image that it affects—hence the term “nondestructive.”
  • Smart Filters can be treated like layers: Once you’ve applied a Smart Filter, you can then edit or adjust it just as you would a normal Photoshop layer. For instance, you can adjust the opacity of the Smart Filter, which in turn will change how strongly the filter affects the layer to which it’s applied. Like layers, Smart Filters can also be easily duplicated, moved, and deleted.
  • Smart Filters can be stacked: In previous versions of Photoshop, the process of applying several filters to one image required many laborious steps. With Smart Filters, you can “stack” filters instantly, which lets you get the same results in just a few clicks.
You can use Smart Filters with any default or plug-in Photoshop filter. If you prefer not to use a “Smart” version of a filter, you can still use filters in the conventional way in Photoshop CS3.
