How to Convert Your Image to a Smart Object
To apply a Smart Filter to an image, you must first convert that image to a Smart Object. (You can always step back through your History to undo the conversion to a Smart Object.) Note that once you convert an image to a Smart Object, you’ll no longer be able to paint on the image without first rasterizing the layer it contains (Layer > Rasterize > Smart Object).
- Open the image to which you’d like to apply the Smart Filter. The example image used throughout this guide is shown here.

- If you’re working with more than one layer, select the layer that contains the image. If you’re working with just one layer, Photoshop will select it for you by default.
- With that layer selected, click Convert for Smart Filter in the Filter menu.

- A pop-up window will appear that warns you about the conversion. Click OK to proceed. If you plan to apply Smart Filters often, check the box marked “Don’t show again” to avoid getting this message again.
- After you click OK, a Smart Object icon will appear within the image icon of your layer in the Layers palette.
