Pilates Equipment
Basic Pilates exercises can be performed with just a handful of supplies. However, some exercises benefit from the use of special Pilates equipment.
Basic Pilates Supplies
One of the most attractive aspects of Pilates is its simplicity. To do Pilates, all you need is:
- Proper clothing: It’s best to perform Pilates in bare feet and with comfortable, breathable clothing.
- Pilates mat: Typically thicker than yoga mats, Pilates mats are designed to cushion and protect the spine. Buy a Pilates mat if your studio does not provide one.
- Mirror: Most Pilates studios are walled with mirrors that allow students to evaluate their form and alignment. If you’re practicing Pilates at home, use a full-length body mirror for this purpose.
- Towel: Use a folded or rolled towel to provide additional support under your neck or back.
- Weights: You may wish to add light weights to your workout. Instructors typically advise using 1-, 2-, and 3-pound weights. Always consult an instructor before introducing weights into your Pilates workout.
- Water: Keep a bottle of water on hand for hydration during workouts. Avoid sugary or carbonated drinks.
Pilates-Specific Equipment
Many gyms and studios that teach Pilates provide Pilates equipment in addition to mats. While extra equipment isn’t
necessary in order to perform basic Pilates exercises, some students find that it enhances their routines. The most popular pieces of Pilates equipment are the Reformer and the Trapeze Table.
-
Reformer: A rectangular frame with a platform that slides back and forth on metal tracks. On one end of the platform is a horizontal bar, and on the other end is a pair of straps. Springs attached to the platform provide resistance when performing exercises such as pushing against the bar or pulling on the straps with your legs or feet. Exercises can be performed lying down, sitting, kneeling, or standing, and work all of the body’s major muscle groups.

-
Trapeze Table: A
rectangular, upholstered platform with a metal pole at each corner. The bars and straps connected to these poles are used to perform everything from sit-ups to advanced acrobatic moves.
