Your Puppy’s First Days at Home

Your puppy’s first few days at home can be challenging for both of you.

Your Puppy’s First Day

Until you bring him home, your puppy will likely have spent his entire life in the comforting presence of his mother and littermates, and the breaking of that bond can be traumatic. To help ease the transition during your puppy’s first day:
  • Use your puppy-proof area: Once your puppy is home, bring him to the puppy- proof area right away. Don’t let him roam freely throughout the house, even under supervision—a new and vast environment can make his transition even more overwhelming.
  • Stay with your puppy: Plan to spend all of the puppy’s first day by his side. By remaining a constant presence, you’ll begin to replace the puppy’s mother as his primary source of food and comfort.
  • Provide treats and play: To help build a positive rapport with your puppy, play with him often and provide treats freely—especially to reward good behavior. It’s a good idea to have each of your family members spend quality time playing with the puppy throughout its first day.

Your Puppy’s First Night

A puppy’s first night alone is perhaps the most traumatic part of the transition to his new home. To help with this:
  • Keep the puppy in his puppy-proof area: Your puppy will likely cry throughout the night if you leave him alone in the puppy-proof area, so consider camping out in the room with him. He’ll be comforted by your presence, and your bond will strengthen.
  • Keep the puppy in your bedroom: If you choose this option, it’s generally best to keep the puppy in his crate to prevent anxiety and accidents due to the new and confusing environment. Line the crate with blankets to provide a comfortable place for him to sleep.

After the First Day and Night

Most puppies adjust quickly to a new home—within a few days, your puppy will likely sleep through the night and stop pining for his mother and littermates during the day. Spend as much time as possible with your puppy during the first week, but after that, try leaving him alone for brief periods.
  1. Start by leaving the room for just a few moments, then by leaving the house for an hour or so.
  2. Every time you return home, visit your puppy right away to show him that you’ll return after you go out.
  3. Leave your puppy alone for longer and longer periods of time throughout its first week. He’ll soon be comfortable on his own for up to eight hours per day.
