Roulette Etiquette
Roulette is a unique social situation with its own etiquette and conventions. The following dos and don’ts will help you act like a professional at the roulette table.
Roulette Etiquette Dos
- Do speak up if a mistake has been made that costs you money: The croupier will usually correct it as politely and efficiently as possible. On the other hand, you’re under no obligation to point out errors in your favor.
- Do tip the croupier occasionally: The best way to tip is by making a bet for the croupier. Do this by saying, “Here’s one for the you,” then place an additional bet next to yours. As with most service professionals, roulette dealers depend on your tips. Tipping makes for a more pleasant playing experience.
- Do ask questions if you’re unsure about anything: Croupiers expect questions and are generally happy to help.
- Do exchange your roulette chips for regular casino chips before you leave the table: Non-value roulette chips lose all their value the moment you leave the table with them.
Roulette Etiquette Don’ts
- Don’t try to bet with regular casino chips: You may make bets at roulette only with the specially colored chips distributed at the roulette table when you buy in.
- Don’t berate the croupier, even if you’re losing: He or she has no real control over the outcome of the game. If anything, the croupier wants you to win since it may make you more likely to tip.
- Don’t attempt to place or change a bet that you’ve made after “No more bets!” is called: This can easily be misconstrued as cheating.
- Don’t place your bets until after the croupier announces, “Place your bets!”: Again, not following this etiquette can easily be misconstrued as cheating.
