Saltwater Aquarium Basics

Saltwater aquariums, also called marine aquariums, offer an ocean environment within your home. They are more challenging to set up than freshwater aquariums, but you’ll likely find that the results are worth the effort.

Freshwater vs. Saltwater Aquariums

In many ways, keeping a saltwater aquarium is similar to keeping a freshwater aquarium. Both share many of the same accessories and require regular care and maintenance. Whether you’re considering starting a saltwater aquarium as a first aquarium, or you’re interested in switching from a freshwater to a saltwater aquarium, it’s helpful to have a sense of the differences between the two types.
  • Additional equipment: Saltwater aquariums need more equipment than freshwater aquariums do.
  • Tank size: Saltwater tanks tend to be bigger than freshwater tanks.
  • Fewer fish: Saltwater fish need more swimming space than freshwater fish do, so a marine aquarium can’t hold as many fish as a similarly sized freshwater aquarium can.
  • More diversity: In addition to fish, you can populate a saltwater aquarium with other ocean dwellers, such as crabs, shrimp, or anemones.
  • Time investment: Saltwater aquariums require more maintenance time than freshwater aquariums do, particularly when it comes to maintaining water quality. You’ll need to spend at least a few minutes each day and about half an hour once a week maintaining your marine aquarium.
  • Expense: The larger tanks and additional equipment needed for saltwater aquariums make them more expensive to set up than freshwater tanks. Also, saltwater fish tend to cost more than freshwater fish.
