About This Drug

Tacrine is used to treat mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease. This drug can improve symptoms such as thinking ability. However, it cannot cure Alzheimer’s disease nor prevent the disease from growing worse. You may need to take tacrine for several weeks before you begin to experience its full benefits.

Changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease include a shortage of acetylcholine (ACh), a chemical that helps the brain function properly. Tacrine was the first drug found to raise ACh levels.
