How Tarot Relates to Numerology, Kabbalah, and Astrology
Tarot has much in common with numerology, Kabbalah, and astrology: all stem from the idea that our lives are based not on random events but rather on the natural order of the universe. Understanding these three belief systems can enhance a tarot reading.
Numerology
Numerology, which deals with the relationship between numbers and living objects, originated in the 6th century B.C. with the Greek mathematician and philosopher
Pythagoras. He believed that life’s patterns and cycles could be measured in numbers from 0 through 10. Each number has a specific meaning, and knowing those meanings will help you interpret tarot’s numbered cards.

If a number is higher than 10, add its individual digits until you have a single digit. For example, 11 = 2 (1 + 1 = 2).
Astrology
There are many correlations between tarot and the 12 sun signs found in astrology. If you add numbers 1 through 12 (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 11 + 12), you’ll get 78—the number of cards in a tarot deck. And each of tarot’s four suits—wands, cups, pentacles, and swords—corresponds to three of the zodiac’s sun signs.
- Wands: A fire sign (like Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius), this suit represents action and goal-oriented pursuits.
- Cups: A water sign (like Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio), this suit refers to emotional states, love, and feelings.
- Pentacles: An earth sign (like Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), this suit relates to practicality and realistic endeavors.
- Swords: An air sign (like Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius), this suit deals with communication and the trials and errors of life.
Kabbalah
Some believe that tarot originated from Jewish mysticism, or Kabbalah. One of Kabbalah’s main facets is the Tree of Life, a diagram that explains the history of creation. The Tree of Life consists of 10 spheres (which correspond to the 10 numbered cards in each of tarot’s four suits) linked by 22 paths (echoing the 22 Major Arcana cards). According to Kabbalah, contemplating the Tree of Life can lead to enlightenment.
