About This Drug
Thalidomide is used to treat erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a skin condition associated with leprosy. When this drug was first prescribed in Europe in the early 1960s, it caused a number of severe birth defects. It was only approved for use in the United States in 1998, and is very strictly regulated. Thalidomide is also being used in the treatment of certain cancers. It slows cancer cell growth by preventing the formation of new blood vessels.
Thalidomide works by suppressing the immune system. It affects white blood cells and tumor necrosis factor (TNF).
